TIPS
  1. Flatbed scanners can produce images with very high resolutions, but their large footprint will need some space. They are best for bound documents like books or magazines, especially if they have a lid attached to a floating hinge.
  2. Sheetfed scanners are smaller and more portable, but do not produce the same quality as flatbed scanners. Some models are even equipped with automatic document feeders which can be helpful when digitizing lots of loose pages.
  3. There are also handheld scanners, which are the most portable of all scanner types.
  4. Automatic duplexing can be a big time-saver if your scanner has this feature, as it scans two pages in one pass.

Pros: No warm-up time, Inexpensive, Excellent output
Cons: Outdated version of Adobe Photoshop Elements

Review: The V600 by Epson is a great choice for the budget-minded. It boasts four dedicated buttons which allow you to quickly scan, copy, scan to email and create PDF files. Thanks to its ABBYY FineReader Sprint software, it also has the ability to turn your documents into various formats. This energy-efficient scanner provides crystal clear images with its 6400 x 9600 dpi resolution. It enables you to scan documents and photos from film and negatives for up to 17" x 22" and offers faster scanning than any of its competitors with its ReadyScan LED Technology. Installation was a snap to do. Just plug in the USB cable, turn the unit on and install the included software. On the other hand, its film holder could be further improved for an easier and quicker operation. It would also be great if it ships with the current version of Adobe's Photoshop Elements rather than version 7. The Epson Perfection V600 comes with 35mm slides and 6x22cm Medium-format Film Holders. With Epson's Easy Photo Fix, Digital Ice and Adobe Photoshop Elements, you can easily remove dust and scratches, fix the damages on old photos and bring them back to life. Overall, it produces high-quality scans at a relatively low price and it offers usability and features found on more expensive scanners.

Pros: Fast, Easy to set up, Ideal for thick books, Quiet
Cons: Only 1 insert is included, Not that compact, Lacks proper documentation

Review: the Perfection V370, Epson affords you another fast, reasonably-priced photo scanner that is more than capable of delivering notably better quality than most scanners and stunning enlargements of up to 13" x 19" in size. The unit’s 4800 x 9600 optical resolution guarantees amazing detail while Easy Photo Fix strives to breathe new life to your old photos. You don’t just have the freedom to scan as much documents and photos as you want, you can also scan 35mm film and pages from thick books through its 180-degree lid. Scanned documents can be transformed into editable text via the supplied Optical Character Recognition software. The hinge allows the unit to accommodate thick books or photo albums but the way it opens can be a little awkward for right-handed users. The Epson Perfection V370 is a bit lacking when it comes to documentation. It doesn’t come with a paper manual which means that users are required to go online, should they need one. The file is also not in PDF, making it a little difficult to print. On the other hand, once you’ve read the user guide and you’re done with the installation, you can instantly proceed to scanning. The V370’s ReadyScan LED technology ensures that no time is ever wasted. The included Document Capture Software makes it possible and easy to scan to Evernote, Google Docs and other cloud services. Admittedly, this added functionality is a huge plus for professionals or business-minded users. The Epson Perfection V370 remains easy to use, with few buttons and a fully automatic operation. A host of image-editing and easy to use software such as Document Capture Pro for Windows and Document Capture for Mac, ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe, ArcSoft MediaImpression, ABBYY FineReader Sprint OCR and Epson Scan which already has Epson Easy Photo Fix technology is included. Although it only comes with one insert, the Epson Perfection V370 supports 35mm negatives and slides. In terms of size, it is not that compact but not that big either. We’ve seen smaller scanners but this one has a footprint that is just right for any normal-sized workstation.
