Top Computer Speakers by Consumer Reviewers

Most computers today come with a small set of bookshelf speakers, but most often than not, their tiny and distorted sound as well as their low volume fails to impress users. So if you are a music lover, a gamer, a movie buff or if you just really want to experience the full range sound your computer is capable of generating, you need to invest in a good set of computer speakers. Although hooking up external speakers may be costly, it is highly recommended for better sound quality. Computer speakers also come in different sizes and connection options. Some even have built-in controls and other additional features. At IntelliReview, we have the best list of the most popular models available. We use a special formula that looks at hundreds and thousands of reviews from various sources on the Internet. A positive review raises the ranking of the product while an unfavorable review lowers it. This allows us to get a comprehensive look at the best computer speakers in the market. If you're looking for small portable speakers for your laptop or something with a good subwoofer and deep sound, we can help you find the right speakers for your specific needs.

Ranking Updated: August 2016
  1. Computer speakers typically come in the following configurations: 2.0, 2.1., 5.1 and 7.1. Configurations with a ".1" mean that you get a subwoofer along with a set of satellite speakers.
  2. Basic computer speakers only have a single input jack for connecting the unit to your source. If you plan to use your speakers with other devices, choose models that have docks or inputs for those devices.
  3. For more convenience, choose speakers that have a separate control line instead of having them built into the body.
  4. Speakers using a separate power source will sound better than units powered by batteries or through a USB connection.

Pros: Affordable 2.1 speaker system, 30-watt RMS output with 62-watt maximum, dwsk-friendly size
Cons: Exposed cones on satellite, Headphone output is weak, No mid-range

Review: It may not have the same amount of name recognition as other well-known audio equipment brands, but the CA-3602 2.1 Speaker System from Cyber Acoustics is a must-buy if you're looking for great value for money. This desktop speaker set brings quality sound that rivals those of name brands with a price point that’s really easy on the budget. The three-piece CA-3602 speaker set consists of a pair of satellites armed with dual two-inch, high- efficiency drivers, and a 5.25" bass driver for the subwoofer. Both the satellites and the subwoofer are fairly compact, coming in at a desk-friendly 8"height X 3" width X 2.75" depth, and 10" X 7.5" X 7.5 inches, respectively. The design of the satellites are definitely on the modern side, with glossy plastic shells housing the speakers. The subwoofer meanwhile is encased in a solid wood body for excellent sound reproduction. A handy control pod tethered to the back of the CA-3602's subwoofer has dials for the master volume and the bass volume; built into the control pod are a 3.5mm auxiliary input for MP3 players alongside an headphone output jack of the same size. The CA-3602 speaker set drives a 30 watt RMS rating, with a maximum of 62 watts through the satellites and the sub. To be specific, each satellite pushes 6 watts per channel at 4 ohms, while the subwoofer is capable of up to 18 watts at the same impedance. What all this means is that, for a standard-sized room, the Cyber Acoustics CA-3602 is more than able to fill it with crystal-clear, high-quality sound. Although the Cyber Acoustics CA-3602 2.1 Speaker System certainly delivers where it counts, namely superior sound at a nearly rock-bottom price, it does have its own weak points. For example, the satellites have exposed cones instead of having partially-covered ones. This may let sound flow freely, but it's a good idea to keep the speakers away from pointed objects. Headphone output on the CA-3602s is also a little weak compared to speaker output. Finally, it's also recommended to turn down the subwoofer volume at low volumes and up a little when playing loud music in order to balance the output between the bass and treble tones and compensate for the speakers'lack of midrange output.

Pros: Wireless, Good sound quality, Small footprint, Has an aux in and headphone jack
Cons: No option to use batteries

Review: More often than not, compact speakers don't produce clear sound and enough bass to make you groove or even move you. The Creative Inspire T12, on the other hand, redefines the quality of sound that you can get from mid-range speakers. If you are a fan of wireless functionality and you've always wanted to de-clutter your workspace, the two Bluetooth connection options on the Inspire T12, rated at a range of up to 10 meters, are a real treat. You can hook up your iPhone or iPod to your speaker using the Creative BT-D5 Bluetooth transmitter; for PCs, netbooks, mp3 players, smart phones or any other Bluetooth device, you can use the Bluetooth sync button embedded in front of the unit. Those who own PCs that are not Bluetooth capable can still experience its great sound by adding a USB Bluetooth adapter like the Creative BT-D1 Bluetooth USB transmitter to your computer set-up. A power or wireless connection indicator LED signals when your speaker is turned on or when your devices are successfully connected. Even without a subwoofer, the built-in BassFlex technology puts out surprisingly strong bass that matches any music genre. The T12 also provides sufficient volume and superior audio accuracy with its full-range drivers. So if your main purpose is to watch movies or listen to music, these wireless speakers will leave you impressed. Sound is on par with higher-priced speakers and the volume control permits easy volume adjustment. A headphone jack and an auxiliary input are likewise ready for use. Since wireless technology is relatively new for speakers, you'll still need to use a power adapter and connect the left speaker to the right. The option to use standard batteries is unavailable yet. At roughly half the size of higher-end computer speakers, the Creative Inspire T12 fits any desk arrangement while giving you enough space to move. The glossy black finish and thin profile also lets you dress up your desktop.
