TIPS
  1. Camera lenses are usually sorted by focal length. Standard and wide-angle lenses are fine for ordinary use, a long telephoto lens is designed for wildlife or sports photography, and for tight close-ups, a macro lens can be used.
  2. If you own a budget DSLR without autofocus functionality, you may consider lenses that offer motor-driven AF.
  3. A few lenses offer optical stabilization, particularly telephoto lenses.
  4. Some lenses are made from metal alloys, while some are made from plastic. The tradeoff with the latter is that it is lighter, but not as durable.

Pros: Compatible with Nikon DX format digital and 35mm film cameras, Able to simulate picture angle of equivalent 105-450mm lens attachment, Vibration reduction feature
Cons: Plastic casing makes it feel too lightweight, Difficulty with Autofocus at 300mm range, High price

Review: If you're looking for an everyday lens for your digital Nikon SLR, a promising addition to your photography kit would be the Nikon 70-300mm Zoom Nikkor Lens. This high power telephoto zoom lens, which is compatible with both Nikon DX format digital and traditional 35mm film cameras, measure 5.6 inches long and 3.1 inches in diameter, and has an aperture range of f/4 to 5.6. Its performance makes it a perfect fit for shots requiring the use of a telephoto lens, like sports events or nature photography. Combine it with a Nikon DX format digital SLR and you can even simulate the picture angle allowed by using an equivalent 105-450mm lens attachment. At the heart of this lens are two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements that deliver higher contrast and resolution, performance-wise. Nikon's Silent Wave motor drives the rapid Internal Focus system. This feature offers reliable autofocus at high speeds and tight distances up to 4.9 feet. Some users have noticed, however, that the Autofocus tends to get difficult around the 300mm range. Additional features of this particular lens include Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VRII) technology which allows you to shoot sharper images while setting slower shutter speeds. Two sub-modes in the VR automatically compensate for camera shake either while holding it steady or in motion. With regards to construction, it feels deceptively lightweight, probably due to the plastic casing instead of the usual aluminum, but it is actually a sturdy lens suited for your everyday pack. Its F mount even has a gasket that provides good basic protection against the elements. The bigger issue about the Nikon 70-300mm Zoom Nikkor Lens, though, is that it does command a particularly high price, being essentially two lenses in one.

Pros: Lightweight, 9 blades, Minimizes glare, Incredible picture quality
Cons: Slow autofocus, No Image stabilizer

Review: At this price point, the slow autofocus and lack of an Image stabilizer of the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Fixed Focus Lens can be disappointing but taken as a whole, its superior image quality and excellent light collecting ability make it highly recommended for users of Nikon FX-format and DX-format cameras. The Nikon Super Integrated Coating minimizes glare and the exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor permits ultra-quiet focusing. There are two focus modes: Auto and Manual. In terms of optics, it is constructed with 8 elements in 7 groups. The lens can also be considered well-accessorized as it comes with a supplied HB-47 Bayonet Lens Hood, a LC-58 Snap-On Front Lens Cap, a LF-1 Rear Lens Cap and a CL-1013 Soft Case. In contrast with other lenses, it is armed with a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, instead of the usual 7 blades. This ensures that the out-of-focus elements have a wonderful blur. While it makes it heavier, the lens is still considerably light. Weighing merely 9.9 oz. or 280g and having an overall dimension of 2.9 x 2.1 in. (Diameter x Length), it will not burden you on your next trip and it can easily fit in your camera bag. The Maximum Aperture of f/1.4 and Minimum Aperture of f/16 also offer shallow depth of field along with decent shutter speed. You can capture breathtaking pictures with no flash when shooting indoors or in brightly-lit situations but it does require the use of one in tricky lighting conditions. As mentioned, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Fixed Focus Lens does not provide rocket-fast focusing. Nevertheless, it is a great all around lens. It has excellent build quality and it produces sharp, professional-looking images no matter the situation.
